Top 10 best dressed at the 2013 Grammy Awards

11 Feb
Some celebs were well dressed while others were…meh! Let’s focus on the ones who killed it and discuss a few fails. Which ones were your faves? More pictures after the break!
#1 Kelly Rowland in a George Chakra Couture gown
She destroyed them with that dress. Her body!
#2 Nas
Now this is classy!
#3 Carrie Underwood
Classy!
#4 Solange
She always keeps it real and original.
#5 Chris Brown in his Lanvin suit
Love it or hate it…I love it.
#6 Luke James
Awww nice suit!
#7 Rihanna
Of course.
#8 Justin Timberlake in his suit and tie 😀
Classy awwww
#9 John Legend and his girlfriend Chrissy Teigen
They’re so cute together, their outfits were on point
#10 Beyoncé in her Osman Yousefzada jumpsuit. Yes. I love you Bee but I had to put Solange on top…Bey almost didn’t make it because of these horrible Le-Chateau-Like open toed shoes.
These 5 almost made it to the list…however…
1. Miguel
The shoes. WHY??? This outfit could’ve been nice.
2. J-LO
The dress is sexy and simple but the hairstyle…no.
3. Katy Perry
Maybe it’s her face on that picture….or the fact that the dress is blah…maybe a slit could’ve been nice. I don’t know it’s just wrong.
4. Drake
Everything could’ve been nice if his pants weren’t so basic.
5. Alicia Keys
Why do I feel like I’ve seen this dress somewhere in St-Hubert plaza?

[MEN’S FASHION] Spotted! Dean Ellis from PhillipEllis

6 Feb
On the second day of Montreal’s Fashion Week 24th edition, I was blown away by this man’s style. I absolutely wanted to feature his style on Versass before Journal Métro, Elle Québec or other publication (HA!). Dean Ellis was here from Toronto and he looked like he came straight from a magazine’s fall/winter spread. I’m serious.

(More pics and details on what he is wearing after the break)

I met him backstage after the Ralph Leroy fashion show. When asked how he helped for the show and how he met Ralph, he replied:

“I was called in to help him as his production manager and to get a better flair of his work as I will be producing and styling the Ralph Leroy Collection in the next Toronto Fashion Week. I am extremely excited. I met Ralph when he showcased his collection in Toronto last year….We simply connected. He checked out my work and he called me asking if I would take on this role. It was an awesome experience and I cannot wait to work with him again”.

I appreciate his love for vintage clothing/accessories. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to be stylish and chic! And this does not only apply for women as Dean is the living proof of that statement. All you need is some patience, a good eye and a good tailor to alter certain items.

Loving the buttons on the jacket. It’s all about the details.
-Jacket: Vintage (7$). Alterations were made for a better fit.
-Pin: Vintage (2$)
-Pants: Ralph Lauren
-Bow tie: Given by the Haitian diplomat to wear for the night
-Jewelry: PhillipEllis

Dean Ellis is a business owner/partner for PhillipEllis, a Toronto based company starting up an upcoming men’s line featuring ties, bow ties, pocket squares and jewelry. Styling is also part of their venture in the fashion world as they also started a branch off company named Qadash.

I cannot wait until their official launch 🙂

I just had to get a picture of the shoes….and the socks

[EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] RALPH LEROY X Kenscoff X Montreal Fashion Week

30 Jan

Montreal Fashion Week is coming up next week! Interesting shows, beautiful people, new collections and….Ralph Leroy. I had so set him apart because his fashion shows are always actual SHOWS: Music, lights, models and entertainment wise.  If you’ve been following him, you surely noticed the anticipation Ralph and his team have created on social media about his upcoming segment during Montreal Fashion Week.

Refined and creative, his new collection will surely turn heads. Although I worked with him for just over 3 years, I am always pleasantly surprised by what he has to offer. His next show shares the name one of Haiti’s most beautiful neighborhood: Kenscoff. Located about 10 km South West of Port au Prince, Haiti, this town is distinguished by its high altitude (approximately 1500 meters), its prestigious aspect and finally, for its cooler temperature. When I first saw the name for the show, my initial thought was: “Well yes! Kenscoff! It’s a highly located prestigious city! Ralph Leroy will present us with a prestigious collection which will be an even better upgrade from his previous ensembles”. However, this man’s thoughts are always a mystery and I knew there was something deeper behind the whole event. The show promises to be out of the ordinary as it will feature 3 famous Haitian models/celebrities (Sarodj Bertin: Miss Haiti Universe 2010, Nayeli Fanfan: Best Female Model of the World 2012 and model Kiki Barth), Eddy Toussaint’s “Ballets of Montreal” and a performance from the dance group “Ekspresyon”.

I just HAD to get an exclusive interview from the man himself. It was a must!

Check out the 5 question blitz with Ralph Leroy after the break.

Sass: Why did you choose to use the name Kenscoff? And why did you choose to have ballet: What relates both of them?

Ralph: Well Kenskoff is a place that brings me many good memories. It is bittersweet because although it’s a place that reminds me of many good times in my life, I also experienced hell there. After spending almost 10 years out of my country, it’s a way for me to forgive my kidnaping attempt…It’s a way to move on and it’s a way for me to go back to my roots and be reconnected to my country. In other words, I wanted to take the positive side of my country (Haiti) & demonstrate the best my country has to offer.

To me, Kenskoff is a magical place in haiti. It is beautiful and is also full of contradictions: This is how I created the harmony of that contrast through my new collection. This is my 5th year coming back to Montreal Fashion Week and I needed to unleash my beast: Kenskoff.

I alway was into the classical side of areas such as music, dance and poetry. In the past, I have worked with different ballet companies in Haiti doing things like as acting, artistic directing etc. and also, I’ve always had a passion for dance and music. Furthermore, art has always been a part of my life and through Kenscoff, you will see the harmony between two different genres of dance as they will unite with one type of music.

S: Interesting! So basically you wanted to demonstrate variety without necessarily relating Kenscoff to the ballet?

R: Nothing relates Kenscoff to the ballet…but Leroy has to always do things differently by mixing beauty and exaggeration.

S: Yes…that I know!

R: I would call it the designer fantasy…I always go for what is different and unique. That way, people will remember it.

Sass: Without giving it away, what is different about this collection? Can we get a little preview?

Ralph: To give you a little preview, I would tell you that this season, I am going more towards metal colors mixed with brighter colors. Revised classical pieces…and did I mention gowns? And straw dresses? Oh and did you know about the Congo skirts I will showcase? And get ready for a new leather bag collection…and Leroy’s new look! I have a lot to offer this season. You will finally discover what I’ve had in store for awhile.

S: OH LAWD

R: I’m back stronger and wiser! Not crazier though just….better.

Sass: What have you been up to since the last time you did Montreal Fashion Week?

Ralph: Since the last Montreal Fashion Week, I’ve taken a lot of time for myself. Life has been upside down and I really needed some “me” time. However, I can’t lie: I never stopped working hard. My job is my favourite drug!

Sass: What made you choose these 3 foreign models?

Ralph: Oh this is a long story. Some friends recommended them to me in order to give them a  “push”. I have been following them for a long time! First I followed Sarodj, then Nayeli and Kiki. I identify a little bit of myself in each one of them as they are fighters: I admire them for that. They are strong and by observing them, you might even get the feeling that they are bulletproof. Love them or hate them, you will always have to deal with them as they stay focused and will STILL be in your face.

I just love them…I love their energy, their strength and what I love the most is that wherever they go, they proudly represent Haiti. I might be a designer that is known and loved in Canada, but I will be always known as the “Haitian guy”, the “Immigrant” or the “Black guy”. I proudly embrace and cherish who I am and so do these 3 models. They are young, smart and fresh…full of personality and confidence. Of course these had to be my girls!

Sass: Anything else you’d like to add?

Ralph: Yes! I would like to add that I have a great surprise this season with a new face that I will introduce to Montreal and her name is Vanessa Nicolas: She is just beautiful inside and out. (See Sass notes at the end of the article). I would also like to take the time to publicly thank my friend Madeline Ledan who is a top designer who traveled from Haiti to Montreal to fully live the Kenscoff experience with me.

A big thank you to my fans and family who never stopped supporting my craziness and continued to love me and what I do. A big thanks to you Sarah…it’s been 5 years since I have known you and you always whole heartedly showed loved and support. I still remember when you offered to help me out and although I said no, you insisted until I said yes! I admire your persistence in life: Whatever you want, you go for it and grab it. You are a real Kenscoff girl.

S: **Speechless** Thank you Ralph!

Don’t Kenscoff during Montreal Fashion Week!

Sass notes: Vanessa Nicolas is one of my best friends. It was always her dream to be a model and I never doubted her: She is sooooooo beautiful!  Before the interview, I thanked Ralph for giving her the opportunity to make her dream come true by encouraging her and casting her in her shows. I wish her the very best and I know she is going to KILL IT! She is the next big thing in Montreal, watch out for her! I love you Vanoush!

Dear Kanye, I love these shoes

22 Nov

Dear Kanye,

I need these shoes in my life. I won’t even
go look at the price tag.

I cannot afford them…………………yet. I hate you Kanye….No it’s not true. I don’t hate you. I just wish your awesome collaboration with Giuseppe Zanotti was not a temptation to ruin my wallet. I also think that your relationship with Kim is superficial but it’s still weirdly and disgustingly cute.

Kimye in Europe
Kimye.
Ugh.

Bye.

What Sassou wore: Hot summer day off

14 Jul
I LOVE this dress I got from Beacon’s closet and couldn’t wait for Lahens, my couturier extraordinaire, to arrange it for me it so I could rock it! It orignally has to be tied behind the neck but I used the “American Apparel” method and turned it into a tube dress…well for that day anyways! Really appreciated all of the compliments I got for it and decided to share the details of this outfit with you guys 😀

Dress: Beacon’s Closet on 5th ave in Brooklyn, NY. Vintage HERMÈS! Believe it or not! I am still in shock I found an Hermès dress for a reasonable price. It wasn’t in the best state in terms of fit but I bought it anyways and got it fixed.
Belt: ADS. 2$. Real talk.
Bag: Got this one at Zara in Paris last year. Haven’t seen it in Montreal yet! Niiiice 😀
Bracelet: My own 🙂
Shades: Gucci. Amazing gift from Paris. Thank you daddy!
Earrings: Urban Behavior. With short hair, gigantic earrings are not an exaggeration.

I like mixing the old with the new and have a particular love for vintage/2nd hand items that are super unique.

Bold? Courageous? Yep! I cut my hair

14 Jul
Remember my previous post where I explained why I decided to go natural? Remember when I said that I would do a long-term transition and let my hair grow to a reasonable lenght THEN cut it?

Well…

See…

Things didn’t quite go the way I planned.

I got fed up of dealing with the two textures and my relaxed hair was starting to break at the demarcation line (the point between your natural hair and natural hair). So after much complaining, deep thoughts, reconsideration and advice from my loved ones including my hairdresser, I decided to just chop it off and start over! I didn’t do the chop for the “style”, more for the sake of healthy hair and actually ended up liking it! I was scared to lose some of my femininity and had no idea how it would look like on me but at the same time, I was willing to take the risk and didn’t give a damn what others would say. So on July 5th, I did it. Check out some more pictures after the break + the video of my transition + big chop 🙂 You can see more pics/posts of this journey  + the progression and growth on my Tumblr page!

What Sassou wore: Cream colors

3 Jun
I got a lot of compliments for this outfit! There is actually nothing new, except for my wife beater.

-Wedges: Aldo
-Skirt: 25 year old vintage skirt from God knows where
-Wife beater: Le Garage. They have great, affordable, long-lasting wife beaters. I bought it with the 25$ gift card I got in the gift bag at the opening of the Garage/Dynamite store on Ste-Catherine and Peel.
-Chain: My own, my favorite, my lucky charm and it has no brand. It was a Sweegt 16 gift.
-Watch: Marc Jacobs
-Hoop earrings: Aldo.

If you don’t count my watch, I think my whole outfit isn’t even worth 50$ since I got the wedges on sale. But the style and the elegance of the skirt and ensemble in general…PRICELESS!

DAY 2: SOMETHING YOU FEEL STRONGLY ABOUT

This is a tough one since I feel strongly about a lot of things. However, there is one thing I have discovered the hard way:

Following your passion is the way to happiness.

For me, it speaks for itself although I keep realizing it during the most random moments (The numbers of Déjà Vus I have are intense). Lord knows I’ve done a lot of changes in my life when it comes to school and career. From law to finance to marketing to working in retail then telemarketing and now mortgages, I’ve seen it all. But at the end of the day, I’ve looked back in at my life and understood that there are three things I absolutely love and that are always a part of my life, no matter how busy I am.

1. Writing

You must be thinking “Well obviously!!!”, but sometimes something is so natural that you don’t even realize it is a passion or a talent. When I was a kid, I learned how to read and write at a very young age and I remember just sitting in my room, writing stories. Unlike other kids, I hated drawing and preferred reading and especially writing. This trend followed me throughout my life… And I am not limited to writing stories, I also love writing poetry but it is very personal to me and I rarely share it….I think I shared poems only 3 times in my life: The first time in school during an oral presentation, the second time I recited a poem I wrote on Haitian women as my talent during the Miss Citronnelle Canada pageant and the last time in 2008 on Facebook, when I was going through very rough times. I don’t know…I’m shy. Can’t share my poetry..yet. Maybe one day I will!

Check out my book collection and Barbie notebook (where I used to write my stuff).  With my signature high bun 😀

When it comes to writing in general, I love it with all of my heart. It is the most healing thing for me, it is also

my biggest stress reliever. Sometimes I write things on a piece of paper and throw it away afterwards, simply to get rid of certain emotions. I love writing about real life events and passions (like food, for example), but I also have a thing for writing fictional stories. I have not done it in awhile but it is something I did often while in elementary and high school and got many awards for it. Would I want to become a published author? Yes. Would I want to pursue writing? Definitely, but in my own time since I would like to write about food, relationships and my travels in the near future. Would I want to do this as part of a living? Without any hesitation.

2. Fashion

Again, this is something you can see on the blog and it is something I have always appreciated. This section wouldn’t be complete without me talking about my number one inspiration in the fashion department: My mother. When I was little, she used to dress me up in the latest fashions, take pictures and explain to me why she would coordinate my clothes in such and such ways. When I reached the age where I could get dressed by myself, she would literally inspect me from head to toe before letting me head out of the house to go to school. If things did not coordinate or did not look fashionable together, she would take the time to tell me why it was not that way. Because of her love for clothes and makeup, I started looking at fashion magazines like Elle, Châtelaine and the fashion section of Ebony ever since I was able to read. When it comes to fashion, I am not the type of person to always go with the latest trend or dress in the most fashionable manner (I’m a little bit more simple), but I will appreciate it by doing things such as simply admiring certain bold styles or by helping others (especially men) with their clothing choices. I believe my love for vintage clothing comes from the fact that I prefer older styles, especially from the early 80’s and love the fact that many trends come back.

Fresh!
Matching outfit and hair ribbons, 80’s style
I think my biggest fashion icon is my mother since even to this day, she always walks out of the house looking fresh. Other people I admire in the fashion area are: Michelle Obama, Solange, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy, Adrienne Bosh and Nicole Ritchie. My favorite designer is Chanel even though I can’t afford it yet because of the brand’s class and simplicity. And finally, if I could live in one fashion capital of the world, it woiuld be New York.

I wish my mon still had this outfit. I definitely would’ve rocked that white shirt!
Leopard dress and red lipstick. Gorgeous!

3. Food & Gastronomy

Okay although I only started cooking about six years ago, my love for gastronomy has been there for awhile. Again, it started at childhood. While all the other kids wanted McDonalds (Why do I suddenly think of Eddie Murphy in Raw going “But…this is not McDonald’s….” lol), I always wanted better, like garlic shrimp. And I was a tough judge, too: I was PICKY!!! My love for food is unconditional now. It’s not only food, actually, I also love wine, ambiance and everything in relation to gastronomy:  I live to eat, I don’t eat to live. Writing about it or attending fashion events which serve delicious food are just some of the few things I do in order to fulfill my gastronomical appreciation.

Don’t touch my cake. Or 5* Barbancourt Rhum, as a matter of fact
And when it comes to cooking, it is my biggest stress reliever and passion after writing. The best moment is actually looking at people while they are enjoying my food! I don’t know about you guys but when I cook a lot, I am not that hungry when the food is ready because I’ve been eating it and tasting it the whole time I was preparing it. One of the things that make me the happiest is to just look at the people’s reaction when they’re eating one of my mmeals. In other words, I love it when I am able to give them a foodgasm! When people sincerely tell me “Wow that’s really good”, it is one of the best things that could happen in my life! I put all of my heart into my cooking and others appreciating it is my biggest reward and motivator. Which is one of the reasons I started this blog 🙂

In conclusion, whatever I do as a career will be in relation with one or more of these three passions. These things make me happy and no matter how hard I work in those areas, it is always with a smile and I do not even see time pass by. I’ve come to the realization that money is important, but if you do something you don’t like because of the it you become extremely miserable. No matter how “respected” your job is, you will never be happy if you want to shoot yourself every day on your way to work because you hate it so much. But when you love what you do, things are more positive and I am a firm believer that eventually, the money will come.

Follow your dreams 🙂

Look of the week: Teyana Taylor actually looks feminine

25 May

Teyana Taylor is very pretty but usually she’s such a tomboy. It’s nice to see her in a nice, feminine and sexy dress! If you got it, flaunt it!

The first lady of G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam wore this beautiful white Emilio Pucci dress in Cannes at the movie premiere of
Kanye West’s  “Cruel Summer” (which I need to see, by the way, Kanye has such a twisted mind: I’m sure the movie will be awesome).

Picture from NecoleBitchie.com

I love how she accessorized this dress with Versace pumps and a gold belt. However, her hairstyle could’ve looked more refined and it kind of looks like a mess: Her hair down with soft curls or an up-do would’ve added more class to this already elegant look. But hey, let’s appreciate the effort, the fact that these are her real boobs and this GORGEOUS gown!

So what do you think? Yay or Nay?
